AR Workshop puts its customers to work — that’s the whole idea.
Based in Pineville, North Carolina, the DIY boutique business is like a grown-up wood shop class. Add BYOB wine, a few girlfriends or family members, and in no time the creative juices flow, leading to a handmade item that can be proudly displayed at home or given for a birthday or wedding.
The wood projects are farmhouse chic, a popular decor trend. Products include wood signs, lazy susans, chalkboard art and centerpiece boxes. Other items include totes, canvas pillows and canvas wall hangings.
“The idea of doing something yourself has become really popular, and that’s why I think people love it,” said Marsha Shalley, owner of the Tallahassee franchise.
Tallahassee’s AR Workshop is opening in the Betton Place Shopping Center, 1950 Thomasville Road (home to Food Glorious Food). The grand opening is from 5 to 8 p.m. April 12 and includes tours, giveaways, swag bags, drinks, light bites and a mini DIY project.
A hardcore DIY fan, Shalley said she didn’t know about AR Workshop until a longtime friend in Ohio raved about her experience. Shalley attended a class during a ladies night out and left thinking it could be a new DIY attraction to the Tallahassee market.
“I had to figure out what all the buzz was about so I attended a workshop to see for myself … I was obsessed and had to open one of my very own,” she said
Those who register during the grand opening will receive $15 off a class, the typical cost of which ranges from $40 to $90.
Classes last about two hours. Participants register ahead of time and select the product and stencil they prefer, along with the phrasing or words. The customized materials are provided at the workshop.
AR Workshop has more than 80 franchises across the country, including Arizona, Colorado, Texas, New Hampshire and New Jersey. Several are scattered across the state: Brandon, Naples, Port St. Lucie, Tampa and St. Petersburg. The company hopes to open 100 stores this year.
